Abstract:
Methanolic extractsof Pterocarpus marsupium Roxb (P. marsupium) andOcimumsanctum Linn (O. sanctum)
were preparedseparatelyandthenadministeredtobothnon-diabeticandalloxaninduceddiabeticadult
female Wistarratsasamixtureofbothatadosageof500mg/kgbodyweight,anditseffectwaschecked
on serumandtissuelipidstogetherwithcorticosterone,estrogenandprogesteroneprofile.Further,tissue
load ofmetabolites(cholesterol),enzymaticandnon-enzymaticantioxidantstatustogetherwithlipid
peroxidation levelsandserummarkersofhepaticandrenaldamagewerealsoassessed.Resultsofthe
present studystronglysupportthepossibilityofthisherbalcombinationinhumanstomeettheobjective
of achievingaholisticameliorationandcureofdiabetesas,theherbalextractmixtureof P. marsupium
and O. sanctum has succeededinnotonlyrectifyingdyslipidemiabutalsoinrestoringtheendogenous
antioxidant levelstotheprediabeticstatus.Herbalpreparationsareidealcandidatesofchoiceandin
this context,thepresentcombinationof P. marsupium and O. sanctum provides compellingevidencefor
a holisticefficacyinameliorationofassociateddiabeticmanifestations/dysregulations.
